A better local waste management in Moldova

As a candidate country for accession to the European Union, Moldova is gradually aligning itself with European legislation and standards. In this process, the provisions and changes to the EU regulatory framework are becoming increasingly relevant for the business environment, public administration, and civil society.

“Responsible for Waste Management” – an important step towards better local waste management!

8 representatives from local public administration and municipal enterprises from the districts of Edineț, Briceni, and Ocnița have successfully concluded the accredited course “Responsible for Waste Management,” adapted and specifically designed for officials within the regional public administration bodies covering Waste Management Region 8.

This training program, organised within the project “Strategic Communication on Waste Management”, implemented by e-Circular.org and EcoVisio, and funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Chisinau in partnership with the Association of Rural Councils of the Republic of Moldova, aimed to develop skills for efficient and sustainable management of municipal waste at the regional level.

As a result, participants received certificates of professional competence, recognising their efforts and commitment to applying best practices in waste management.

These trainings play an important role in achieving the objectives of the National Waste Management Program 2023-2027, contributing to:

  • Developing capacities for integrated municipal waste management at the regional level;
  • Promoting good practices for waste prevention and reduction;
  • Improving collaboration between local public authorities and producers of products subject to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR);
  • Strengthening capacities for public education and awareness-raising on the importance of separate waste collection.

New EU Rules on Textile Waste Reduction

On February 18, 2025, the European Council and the Parliament reached an agreement on revising the Waste Framework Directive, imposing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles. Producers will be required to manage textile waste generated by their products, promoting sustainable design, reuse, and recycling.

The new rules apply to all producers, including those in e-commerce and regardless of whether they are based within the EU.

EPR regulations will cover products such as clothing and accessories, footwear, bedding, kitchen linens, curtains, and hats.

Illegal exports of textile waste will be combated, and sorting will be mandatory before shipment.

The EU generates 12.6 million tons of textile waste annually, with only 1% of textiles being recycled into new products.
