Regulation on the European Health Data Space

Daniela Cîmpean, President of Sibiu Provincial Council and Member of the National Delegation of Romania to the European Committee of Regions (CoR) has been appointed in June 2022 rapporteur on the “European Health Data Space” (EHDS). The EHDS is a platform proposed by the European Commission to facilitate the exchange of health data, establishing clear rules, common standards and practices, digital infrastructure and governance. This opinion will be adopted in CoR Plenary Session on 8 February 2023.

In her State of the Union address on 16 September 2020, the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a new legislative proposal to create an European health data space. On 3 May 2022, after a public consultation, the European Commission published a proposal for a regulation on the EHDS as a health-specific data sharing framework, also one of the central building blocks of a strong European Health Union.

At this moment, Sibiu Provincial Council is the first and single local or intermediate public authority in Romania that has implemented a digital platform for doctors and patients. “Portal Medical” offers the possibility for both patients and doctors to share information and relevant medical data in digital format in order to provide treatments and services.
